Wind energy company Nordex Energy South Africa, which is building a new wind turbine concrete tower factory in Jeffreys Bay, says the ongoing construction is benefitting the region.

“The construction of the plant is stimulating the local economy and fostering growth in the local supply chain through increased demand for raw materials and related goods and services, which is benefitting local businesses and suppliers,” says Nordex Energy South Africa sales head for Africa David Moncasi Hortet.

The factory, which is scheduled for completion by September, spans just under 10 ha, will create about 200 jobs during construction and employ about 350 people once manufacturing begins.

The factory will produce 120-m-high towers for three wind farms with a combined capacity of 336 MW, thereby significantly boosting the country's renewable-energy share and enhancing energy security. It will also solidify the region as a wind power zone with 13 wind farms.

The factory is located 1.5 hours from the Port of Ngqura.

“We believe the new production hub may enhance our competitiveness in future bidding processes, while also demonstrating the versatility and proven technology of our in-house concrete towers,” he says.
